Barber / Barbour The origin of the name is a question upon which there is some difference of opinion. All agree, however, that Normandy was its original European home, and that it came into England at the time of the Norman Conquest in the 11th century, and the claim has been made that it came into Normandy indirectly from Persia. Barber is an early medieval occupational surname for a barber. The derivation is from the Old French "barbier", Anglo-Norman French "barber", from the Latin "barbarius", a derivative of "barba", beard. The barber of the Middle Ages was a skilled practitioner; he not only cut hair and shaved beards, but also acted as a surgeon and tooth-puller. Job descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the name bearer, and later became hereditary. The development of the surname includes the following examples: Thomas le Barber (1282, London) and Seykin le Barbier (1299, ibid.), and the modern surname has two forms, Barber and Barbour, the latter is found mainly in Scotland and Northern Ireland. One Thomas Barber was an early emigrant to the American colonies, leaving London on the "Christian" in March 1634, bound for New England. A Coat of Arms granted to the Barber family is a gold shield with two red chevrons between three red fleurs-de-lis, the Crest being a bull's head divided per pale silver and red out of a gold ducal coronet. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Alan le Barbur, which was dated 1221, witness in the "Assize Court Rolls of Warwickshire", during the reign of King Henry 111, known as "The Frenchman", 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling. |

History of Gas Turbine
Unfortunately nothing practical came out of this patent, but Barber was the first man to describe in detail the principle of the gas turbine, and in recent years a working model based on Barber's specification has been built.

John was a bodice-maker and tailor by trade as proved by the following Note: “1663-4, Mar. 2: The Steward of the Hospital is desired to disburse unto Mr. Cole the Summe of 3 li. "I never could find any death records for John and Hannah, nor probates for them. Deaths were often not recorded in the Boston Vital Records- Births, Baptisms were considered inportant, and then marriages were of next importance, and lastly deaths, but usually only when they were leaving enough property to make probate a necessity."

Barber family photos from the early 1900s clearly show the barn. Maynard says the barn probably wasn’t built for an agricultural enterprise, but for the use of the household. "They would have had horses, and there are stalls in the barn, and storage for hay upstairs," she says. "There may have been a place for chickens in the barn, although later there was a chicken coop near the barn."

WESTMORELAND Miss Mary Barber Passes Away After Long Illness Westmoreland, March 2 -- Miss Mary Barber died at the home of her cousin, J. Harvey Skinner, in the village of Westmoreland on Thursday, in her 79th year. She was born January 6, 1834, and is the last of the family of Eleanor Hanna and Thomas Barber, formerly of the town of Verona. Her grandfather, John Barber was one of the founders of the first society formed in the towns of Vernon and Verona for religious worship, at what is now known as Phelps Corners. Her father donated the timber for the M. E. Church at Lowell, and contributed to its support for over 50 years. Miss Barber has been a member and hearty supporter of the M. E. Church at Verona, though not a regular attendant during the last eight years of her life. A large circle of friends and acquaintances will miss her kindly interest and assistance in church and the communities where she is known.. Throughout her lingering illness, due to her failing vitality, she maintained a kindly interest in all about her. Her funeral will be held privately at her request at the home of the cousin where she died on Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m., Rev. Adelbert Warren of Verona officiating. Burial will be made at Verona cemetery.

Birth: May 20, 1865 on a farm in Jackson, Ingham County, Michigan.
Parents: Levi W Barber and Martha Lavina Naracon
Death: January 13, 1937 in Williams, MontanaFuneral services for H.L. Barber were held at the W.H. George Chapel
in Great Falls with the Rev. Edwin Dover of Choteau officiating.
Burial: The body was forwarded to Wheaton, Illinois for burial at nearby Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois
Oak Woods is the most significant historic cemetery of Chicago's South Side. Buried here are such renowned figures as Mayors Thompson and Washington crime boss Big Jim Colosimo, Olympian Jesse Owens, civil rights activist Ida B. Wells, and physicist Enrico Fermi. Six thousand Confederate soldiers, prisoners of war who died at Camp Douglas, are buried together beneath a towering monument.
Oak Woods is located at 67th and Cottage Grove, not far from the lake. The cemetery was established in 1854, a full five years before Rosehill and Calvary, but no burials took place until 1860. Originally, the cemetery was beyond the city limits but conveniently close to railroad lines. Chicago annexed the area containing Oak Woods in 1890. In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition was held only a few blocks north of Oak Woods, in what is now known as Jackson Park.

Making Money Make Money by Herbert Lee “H. L.” Barber
Written nearly one hundred years ago in 1912, was inspired by the popularity of his monthly financial periodical, Investing for Profit, which at the time was the largest exclusively financial publication in America.
After eight years of editing Investing for Profit, published by H.L. Barber & Company of Chicago, “H.L.” decided to write this first book, and it too gained worldwide acceptance and fostered his economic and investment advice to readers hungry for knowledge on the subject. The magazine was published from 1890 into the 1930’s, and in 1917, H.L. wrote a sequel to this first book entitled similarly to the magazine as Investing for Profits, and an ample audience awaited its arrival.

(9.4MB)
Its History and Development From 1760 to 1917
by H. L. Barber, Economist and Financial Writer
Early owners of cars learned by bitter experience what it meant to have a screw loose or a tire put out of business in a town where the supply stores did not sell that particular screw or that particular tire. . . . High maintenance and repair costs ate up many an automobile buyer in the early days of the craze. It wasn't the original cost, although that was high enough; it was the upkeep.

In 1933 President Roosevelt officially signed a Proclamation declaring a Bank Holiday to go from March 6, Monday, to Thursday. All the banks in the nation were closed to review their condition. The great depression had been going on for a number of years and people were unable to pay their bank loans. The assets they put up, mostly farms, simply had no buyers so the banks were not able to sell them or had to sell them at a greatly depressed value. Now days of course the government would step in and bail out the banks at taxpayers expense, but this was prior to 1933 and the banks were losing assets.
The First State Bank of Williams was a solid business and was the first bank to open after the 1933 bank holiday. In 1937, after H.L. Barber's death, The First State Bank was liquidated and all stockholders were paid in full.
