On October 24, 1811, Peter Hoover, a resident at that time of
Montgomery County, Ohio registered at the Cincinnati Land Office pre-emptive title to land in Section 3,
Township 16, Range XIII in a tract known ad that "East and North of the Second Principal Meridian" of
the Indiana Territory. On the same day, his brother Henry obtained land in the same section (Section
3)of the same township (T16R13). This apparently was in what is now Clark County as on June 17, 1834
Peter Hoover of Clark County, Indiana obtained land in Section 12, Township 17, Range I of the Indiana
Survey that included several present counties including Randolph. This is where the section was located
as Cincinnati Land Officer records indicate that the following year, on August 15, 1835, "Peter Hoover,
Jr." of Randolph County also purchased land in this section. His brother Henry purchased additional land
in this section (Section 3) the following month, on November 8th, as well as land in Section 10 of this
township. The three purchases in Section 3 suggest that Henry and Peter had obtained title to most, if
not all, of the 640 acres of this section located in what is now Clay Township, Wayne County, Indiana.
According to the history of Clay Township in the History of
Wayne County, Indiana (pg 197), "Henry Hoover settled early on the east side of Green's Fork; land now
owned by the widow of his son Andrew, their son John, and Perry Wilson. Peter Hoover, brother of Henry,
bought west and adjoining land ; now owned by the widow of his son Emsley, and their son Owen P. Hoover,
and Henry T. Bond." |
